Make a DIY Wishing Lamp

1 DIY Wishing Lamp

This post is sponsored by Disney’s Aladdin.

Aladdin is a classic story of magical wishes, an independent princess, and a prince who learns to be proud of his identity. I’ve teamed up with Disney to celebrate the release of the Aladdin film, now available on Digital HD & Disney Movies Anywhere, and on Blu-ray Oct 13.

In the spirit of the movie, here’s a fun family activity to inspire your modern princesses and princes to make their own wishes come true! They’ll just need a wishing lamp, a handful of wish rocks, and some good old-fashioned goal setting!

Many believe that wishes written down are more likely to come true. I love a good wish list, but for Aladdin fans, a wishing lamp is the perfect place to store wishes for safe keeping.

This activity is all about prioritizing our hopes and dreams, keeping them handy to reflect upon, and thinking through action steps to make them happen. After all, smart wishers know we can’t just count on magic genies to grant our every wish!

Here’s how to make an Aladdin-inspired genie lamp to collect your most treasured wishes: Find a lamp-like container to decorate, or make your own with simple materials. You can use gold plastic party bowls, plates, and a bendable straw to craft a genie lamp shape. Secure with gold duct tape, and decorate with stick-on jewels.

Now it’s time to make some wishes! Go outside and find small rocks with flat surfaces for writing. Paint them gold. Once they’re dry, write your wishes with a permanent, fine tip marker. Make them sparkle with a few more jewels if you like.

Don’t feel like gathering rocks? Wishes written on paper work just as well!

Create family wish collections too! Each family member can take turns adding wishes to the collection. Be sure to take some time to chat about the possible steps required to make those wishes come true. It’s a great opportunity to teach kids about goal setting and to learn more about each family member’s hopes and dreams!
