  • Making personal connections with reading
  • Learning sounds and names of alphabet letters
  • Learning the difference between letters and words
  • Learning to read top to bottom and left to right
  • Learning to follow words with finger as words are read
  • Relying heavily on pictures to get meaning
  • Starting to recognize some sight words
