Good writers can write about the same topic in many different ways. Everyday Journals are a quick way for kids to practice that skill using fun seasonal themes and great picture books as inspiration.
Everyday Journals…
- Expose kids to a variety of fiction and nonfiction picture books for the purpose of building background knowledge for writing.
- Build knowledge of useful “Tier 2” vocabulary related to seasonal themes.
- Practice key writing styles, all related to the same topic, so students gain fluency in writing for different purposes. (Narrative, opinion, and informational/explanatory writing.)
- Practice editing skills using children’s own writing.
Everyday Journals are fast and flexible! Each entry only takes a few minutes to complete because students are just writing a sentence or two. (Each short entry could also be developed into a longer piece of writing during writing workshop time.) Vocabulary words and books are suggested, but you can easily substitute your own.
Each month is available separately in my store, or you can purchase the whole bundle for a big discount. If you want to see how they work, you can download the June version for free. (Note: June only includes 3 weeks of prompts because it is generally a shorter month for students. December includes 4 weeks, and each of the other months have 5 weeks of prompts.)
These are perfect for morning work in the classroom, or extra writing review at home!
