Happy Monday! It’s time for the Vocabulary Building link party! Click here for an intro, or just read on and join in!
This weekend was all about football, and since my husband and I grew up cheering for the Broncos, and our family now lives in Seahawks territory…We were just a bit conflicted. Oh well. Congratulations to the Seahawks, and on to vocabulary…
Our root word of the week is “cept.” (take)
To build background knowledge about the word meaning…
- Read some cept books. Anything football related will do. Football: How It Works (The Science of Sports (Sports Illustrated for Kids), by Agnieszka Biskup, or The Everything KIDS’ Football Book, 3rd Edition: The all-time greats, legendary teams, and today’s favorite players–and tips on playing like a pro by Greg Jacobs are favorites here.
- Brainstorm some words that contain the cept word part. Talk about their meaning. Point out that ceive also means take, and brainstorm some ceive words as well. Obviously focus on age-appropriate words. The idea is to teach words that will help kids stretch their ability to use interesting language in writing and speaking, and to understand the words they read.
- Think about who might frequently use words with this word part in everyday life. (Seahawks and Broncos, gift recipients…)
- Talk about synonyms or antonyms of some cept words.
Now it’s time to build! We brainstormed cept words, (Except, accept, intercept). As I said, we’re all about football this week so interception was the word to build.
Ok, it’s your turn! Please join the fun!
- Take a picture of your kids’/students’ representation of a cept word, OR just link to ANY great idea you’ve blogged about related to building vocabulary!
- Share it somewhere. (Blog, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest…) If you want to connect and help me spread the word, please provide a link back here in your post. You can use the image below. (Or just a text link is fine too.) If you’re posting in places where hashtags are cool, you can use these: #vocabularybuilding and #homeliteracyblueprint
I’ll pick a few to share on my Building + Learning or Literacy Activities Pinterest boards, so make sure you add a clear image and a direct link. - Link up here.
- Check out the other links and show them some love.
Please join me! I don’t want to be the only one at my party. {Insert pitiful begging face here.}
