Vocabulary Building Weekly Link Party (port)

Happy Monday! It’s time for the Vocabulary Building link party! Click here for an intro, or just read on and join in!

port root word

Our root word of the week is “port.” (carry)

To build background knowledge about the word meaning…

  • Read some port books! We love Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go, and DK Eyewitness Books: Transportation. Jackie Higgins also has a great list of transportation books for younger kids on Ready-Set-Read.
  • Brainstorm some words that contain the port word part. Talk about their meaning. Notice other prefixes or suffixes that could change the meaning. For example, the de in deport means to carry back. Obviously focus on age-appropriate words. The idea is to teach words that will help kids stretch their ability to use interesting language in writing and speaking, and to understand the words they read.
  • Think about who might frequently use words with this word part in everyday life. (Road construction crews, pilots, truck drivers, minivan drivers…)
  • Talk about synonyms or antonyms of some port words.
  • You could even make some transportation artwork like these from Just a Girl and Her Blog.

Now it’s time to build! We picked the word transport, since cars and roads happened to be popular this week at our house.

  1. Pick any word with the port word part.
  2. Build it and share a picture here. OR Just link to your favorite vocabulary idea!
  3. Post it somewhere. (Blog, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest…) If you want to connect and help me spread the word, please provide a link back here in your post. You can use the image below. (Or just a text link is fine too.) If you’re posting in places where hashtags are cool, you can use these: #vocabularybuilding and #homeliteracyblueprint
    I’ll pick a few to share on my Building + Learning Pinterest board so make sure you add a clear image and a direct link.

FYI: I just added a link to my Facebook page as an example. Instagram is picky, so you have to link up though a service like Webstagram. Please join me! I don’t want to be the only one at my party. {Insert pitiful begging face here.}
