Literacy Fun Gift Guide: Star Wars

Literacy Fun Gift Guide - Star Wars

As a mom of three boys, you can bet that we have a few Star Wars toys around our house. Here are our very favorites! Hopefully your young Jedi will love them as well!

I think a perfect kid gift is one that includes something awesome to read and write, something creative to do, and something to inspire unstructured, imaginative play. These are great on their own, or gifted as a little collection of fun for a Star Wars fan!

Read:  LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary and the Lego Star Wars Character Encyclopedia were all-time favorite books at our house for a few years.  From an early age, my boys spent hours looking at the pictures, and begging anyone they could find to read the descriptions over and over and over.  We also really like Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.  These image-heavy reads appeal to a variety of ages, and the content is high interest, so even younger kids enjoy looking at the diagrams and hearing them read aloud.  For the youngest Jedis,  Star Wars ABC’s is fun! and many of the DK Readers Star Wars Heroes books. Also, my 8-14 year olds ADORE this cool Star Wars-ish book series.

Make: Get your Star Wars craft on with this fun Star Wars Craft Book!

Write: For an easy DIY gift, just grab a blank book and some stickers or art supplies. Decorate the cover and let the recipient fill it with his own story, photos or drawings of his favorite spaceships, or anything related to the theme. I also love the idea of posing and photographing the minifigures to create a book like this one from Two Straight Lines.

Play: Our favorite pretend play gift choice for a Star Wars fan is a couple of  Star Wars characters and a spaceship.  Lego play is great for the imagination and for strengthening fine motor skills, and I’m constantly amazed at the elaborate “stories” kids create as they play.

May the force be with you!
